Fort Caroline National Memorial

 

In the northeast part of the state, near Jacksonville

 

The memorial pays tribute to the colony the French tried to establish near the mouth of the St. Johns River in 1564. The colony was plagued with hardship and conflicts with the Spanish, who were uneasy about a French settlement that was near the routes used by their treasure ships. The memorial was authorized on September 21, 1950.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

 

Hiking, picnicking, walking to Fort Caroline exhibit. Facilities: Visitor center, fort exhibit, trail, Spanish Pond area, Ribault Column. Bookstore, picnic area. Programs & Events: Ranger programs (weekdays 1 pm and 3 pm, weekends 3 pm). Tips & Hints: Bring insect repellent. Visit in spring and fall. Busiest Jan. and Feb., least crowded Dec. and July.

 

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

 

Free. No hunting or fishing. Leashed pets only on trails. No bicycles on trails. Visitor center and memorial open daily 9-5.

13 mi east of downtown Jacksonville. Closest airport: In Jacksonville (25 mi).
