Canaveral National Seashore

 

In the east-central part of the state, near Titusville

 

The longest stretch of preserved coastline on the east coast of Florida is at this seashore. Besides its recreational appeal, the 24 mi seashore is situated on a barrier island and protects 57,662 acres of undeveloped beach and wetlands. The park offers sanctuary to 1,000 species of plants and 300 species of birds, including 14 threatened or endangered species. The seashore was established on January 3, 1975.

 

WHAT TO SEE & DO

 

Beachcombing, bird- and wildlife watching, boating, canoeing (rentals, outside North District), fishing, hiking, surfing, swimming, visiting El-dora State House, Turtle Mound and Seminole Rest Trail historical sites. Facilities: Information center (North District New Smyrna Beach), Eldora State House. Bookstore. Programs & Events: Ranger-led walks, talks, canoe, and pontoon boat tours. Sea Turtle Watch programs (June and July). Tips & Hints: Visit Oct.-Mar. for best island camping. Beaches busiest Apr.-Aug., least crowded in Oct. and Jan.

 

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS

 

Entrance fee: $5 per car or motorcycle, $3 per bicyclist or walk-in. Backcountry permit required ($10-$20 per night; tel. 386/428-3384 Ext. 10). Reservations required (tel. 386/428-3384) for ranger-led canoe trips, pontoon boat rides, and Turtle Watch programs. Lifeguards on duty Memorial Day-Labor Day, daily 10-4. No beach camping in summer. Park closes when parking lots are full, which occurs during most summer weekends at the North District. Seashore open Nov-Mar, daily 6-6; Apr-Oct., daily 6 am-8 pm. Information center open daily 9-4:30. South District (Titusville) closes three days prior to a shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center and reopens the day following a successful launch.

North District: Take 1-95, Exit 84 on Rte. 44 to Rte. A1A in New Smyrna Beach. South District: Take 1-95, Exit 80 on Rte. 406-402. Closest airports: Orlando International Airport (50 mi), Daytona Airport (50 mi).
